Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative talents as a child because of her Aunt Denise. Her aunt worked in the evening shifts as a nursing assistant, so she could pursue her love for art literature and theater throughout the day. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the arts can serve to promote activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who was a social sassy and pushed DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay, who grew up living with family members in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. Her father was awed by the historic civil rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Selma, Alabama would inspire her later to make an animated film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English as well as African American studies. While she was still in school, DuVernay began to consider producing for television journalism. Her first job was as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to observe the house of one of the members of the jury as well as examine their junk. Her disappointment was evident in her journalistic duties and decided to change to the public relations industry. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist shortly after graduating from college. In 1999, she established her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency.
